Before I get into this, I just want to say that I am no fashion expert but there are some things I've learned other the years that at some point men go through a change when we reach a certain age. You have to be a little more mature, more polished and there are some things that you should and shouldn't be doing. I'll even give you a quick story from my own experience with someone just to illustrate my point.
No More White Socks
White socks were fine when you were young. Fashion for youngster isn't very important. You cant go to the bar, you don't really think about being coordinated or accessorizing. When you are an adult man with a good job, looking for romance or want to update your style, you have to wear black socks. Dark grey at least. The only times it's acceptable to wear white socks is at the gym, playing sports or in the summer when you are wearing shorts. When I was switching over to black socks every time I went out to a department store like Walmart I would add a pack of socks to whatever I was buying.
Keep T-Shirts to a Minimum
If you are going to be outside on a hot day or lounging around the house then by all means, throw on a t-shirt. For most jobs these days t-shirts are not acceptable. You should be investing in button-up shirts, shirts with collars or golf shirts. There are so many jobs or events that call for business casual. That's what that means, no t-shirts. Graphic tees, t-shirts with barbed wire, skulls or tribal designs, don't even bother with them. If you want to accessorize with t-shirts, keep them to black, white or grey.
Wear a Belt
First of all, saggy pants that show your underwear are not cool and "in style". They may be trendy in some parts of the country or world but its not universal. Wearing a belt will always be proper and expectable. Just this small accessory will go a very long way towards finishing off a look. It just has a way of completing an outfit. Get two belts, one black, one brown or a reversible one works too. Only time you don't have to wear one is with shorts.
Update Your Watch
Here is what you want in a watch: Metal, analogue, no more than 3 colours, brand name. Many people have a day watch and an evening watch. Sounds funny but that's the next level after you get your first one. Solid Gold in colour is out. Copper and Bronze is in. If you want something that's safe and classic looking go with silver, silver with gold trim, black with silver or silver with black. Dark blue is good if you are going for a chronograph. Metal band (day) or dark brown leather strap, (evening) if you happen to have two.
Final Words
I once had a friend that was complaining to me that he couldn't find a women. He was 39 years old and hadn't had intimate contact with a woman for 10 years. He wasn't terrible looking and he wasn't in terrible shape. He proceeds to tell me that he went to a nightclub last week and no one would talk to him. I asked him what he was wearing and he tells me. Blue running shorts, white t-shirt, sandles and white socks. After I tell him everything he did wrong and how to change it he says, "I don't care, I like my style."
