Album Review: Southpaw Soundtrack - Various Artists
To accompany the new movie Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal two soundtracks were released. One soundtrack is the score used in the movie. The other is songs that appear or are inspired by the movie. The second is various artists including Eminem, 50 Cent and The Weeknd. The second album is what we will be taking a listen to this week.
The album features 14 tracks of mostly hip-hop but also has a few rock tracks and also some hip-hop tracks that use some heavy music and beats. A lot of the songs are pretty hard and fast paced with the exception of The Weeknd song. Eminem was the executive producer for the soundtrack and he also has two great songs himself on the album.
"Eminem leads the way on this hard-hitting soundtrack, with two new songs worthy of his staggering catalog—the dizzying, Gwen Stefani-assisted torrent “Kings Never Die” and the haunting title cut. Elsewhere, some of rap’s most reliable and exciting names reign supreme. While 50 Cent delivers a cold-blooded hook on “Drama Never Ends,” Action Bronson and Joey Bada$$ team up with Rico Love for the moody, rain-spackled R&B hybrid “What About the Rest of Us.”

They diffidently hit the right sound with this soundtrack. Some songs seem very inspiring while most others are great songs to workout too especially Beast by Rob Bailey and Hustle Street. I enjoy the fact that the majority of the songs have minimal amounts of freestyle rap. There seems to be a lot of effort put forth in coming up with hard-driving beats and catchy choruses. There are a couple songs that are mostly freestyle rap however including the song from Notorious B.I.G.
Overall this is a pretty good album as far as soundtracks go. Great workout music. This is the kind of soundtrack that will make you want to get in the gym and train like hell.
