In part 1 we talked about identifying the drug and identifying if a person is on drugs. For part 2 we will talk about dealing with drug abusers and some lesser known drugs that are gaining popularity among abusers.
The Mind of an Abuser
I believe to gain a deeper knowledge of a topic especially when it comes to people is finding out the way they think. What is the thought process behind their actions? Same thing goes with drug abusers to an even higher degree.
When someone is abusing drugs or what you would call an "addict" when they are not on drugs, the thoughts they have are all about acquiring more drugs. Everything else becomes secondary. This will show through in some ways. One way is by the obsession with money. In everyday life people have to spend money on things such as parking, gasoline, coffee, lunch and so on. Most people don't think twice about these purchases. Your light-bulb goes out so you have to go by a new one, that's normal. When things like this happen to drug abusers they must carefully consider how much money is going to be spent because they must calculate the amount of drugs to keep them going for the next day or two days or week. What will happen is that they will ponder purchases that may be as little as $5 because that may short them for buying the next round of drugs. One of two thing might happen, they ask you for money or they don't buy the item in question.
Shifting Blame
Drug abusers a lot of time will shift blame for things onto someone else or maybe you. Everyone else is to blame for their predicament except for themselves. Anyone that doesn't help the person becomes the bad guy no matter what. The most blatant of this behaviour is when it comes to money. When an abusers asks you for money and you don't give it to them a few things go through their mind. If they know you have money you will become a liar in their eyes. You are also refusing to help them, even-though this is technically enabling the abusers wont see it that way. You are refusing to help. Lastly, the overriding need for drugs will kick in which may result in them stealing from you. The theft is justified in their mind because: you are a liar and you refuse to "help".
Interaction
As the abuser gets deeper into their addiction and it goes on longer and longer the threat of something going wrong will increase. This is why it's something you don't want to be involved with. If the person asks for money, a ride, or to use your phone then say "no". Keep your involvement to a minimum or not at all. Anything you do no matter how small could get you wrapped up in something you don't want to be in. Also, anything you do help them with is just enabling them anyway so don't do it.
Drugs That are Gaining in Popularity
One of the fastest growing categories of drugs are prescription pills. They are easy to get since you can get them with a prescription and sell on the street easily for a good amount of money. Laws surrounding dealing in prescription drugs are just as stiff as illegal drugs so this should be avoided too. For the purpose of this article I will list some common pills that are dealt and abused.
Painkillers - Tylenol 3, OxyContin, Dilaudid, Vicodin, Percocet, Demerol and Lortab
Anti-Anxiety - Seroquel, Adderall, Ambien, Xanax, Clonazepam, Lorazepam and Diazepam
If the above drugs are taken as per doctors orders the results are great but with everything they can all be abused and you can become addicted to them.
Final Words
If you find yourself addicted to drugs and you want off then I urge you to seek help from a doctor or from a drug help line. There are tons of resources available to help people who are addicted. If you happen to know someone who is addicted then you should strongly urge them to seek help and do not enable them with their habit.
