Upgrade a Simple Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Next Level Goodness
I love grill cheese sandwiches, even in their simplest form. All you need is bread, cheese and butter and you end up with a delicious sandwich. There is only a few people that I've met that add ingredients to this simple recipe. So, I decided to show how a few changes to take this sandwich to the next level.
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients that I started with.
White bread
Butter (Softened)
Strong Cheddar Cheese
Yellow Cooking Onion
Sliced Mushrooms
Oregano
Chilli Flakes
Barbecue Sauce
Preparation and Cooking
Start with non-stick pan and a Teaspoon of olive oil. Stove should be set to medium heat and allow it to heat up. While you are waiting its time to prepare your ingredients.
-Butter each side of the bread, set aside.
-Slice off the desired amount of cheese. It this case I used 5 slices out of the brick. Probably 1.5-2 ounces. Set aside.
-Cut off a couple slices from the onion. Make them thin because there wont be enough time for it to cook completely. Set aside.
-Since I was working with pre-cut mushrooms I didn't need to cut them. If you have whole mushrooms, cut them thick because they will cook down. Set aside.
Now its time to assemble the sandwich which can be done right in the pan. By now the pan should be hot enough. Put a piece of bread down (butter side down), then the cheese (spread evenly), next the onions, followed by the mushrooms.
Depending on how much heat you want you can sprinkle as much chilli flakes as you want. I put a couple dashes on. The oregano has a strong taste so I used a small dash of that. Top with the last piece of bread, butter side facing out of course.
Its going to cook fast so keep an eye on it. After about 3 minutes it should be ready to flip. Same for the other side. If you timed it right you should end up with something like this.
Finishing Touches
Let it cool for a minute so the cheese doesn't run out when you cut it. Cut with a sharp knife and instead of ketchup for dipping I used some barbecue sauce.
The results were outstanding. With just a little tinkering with some stuff I had on hand I took my grilled cheese to the next level. I'll definitely be doing it again or maybe switch it up a little next time.
