Many times I have been in a conversation or been overhearing a conversation and someone will spit out some fact that seems amazing but is complete hogwash. The best example is when Lady Gaga is mentioned, someone will always say, "I heard she is a Hermaphrodite." These so called "facts" are so dubious to begin with I don't know why anyone would repeat them and you really shouldn't. It makes you sound stupid and its better to have the right answer on hand you so can correct that person. Men aren't sheep to be lead around by the silliest of stories. Here are some common ones that you should know about and what the right answer is.
Coca-Cola Used to Contain Actual Cocaine
Coca-Cola got its name because it used to use Coca leaves in the brewing process. Coca leaves ARE used to make cocaine but they either use a species that doesn't contain the alkaloid that is made into cocaine or the alkaloid is removed. There are multiple steps involved to produce cocaine that cant be achieved in the process of Cola brewing. If you did have Cola that actually had Coca leaves with cocaine inside them you would have to drink an amazing amount of pop to get high.
The Word "Fuck" is an Acronym for a Phrase
Fornication Under Consent of the King. Fornication Under Command of the King. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Everyone of them is untrue. The word most likely originated from Dutch or Low German around the 15th century. Dutch had a similar word the appears in a poem as fuccant meaning "they fuck" and German had a word Fokken which meant fuck or "to fuck." The meanings behind the words are the same meaning we use it for today.
New York has Alligators Living in the Sewers
This story dates back to the 1930s of people flushing Florida Alligators down the toilet where they live and grow to adulthood. First, of all the rumours were started by writers in the 1930s trying to sell short stories and this was one of them. Second, the Alligator would not have a food source in a sewer unless people were also throwing in chickens and pigs too. There were rumours in the 1930s that an Alligator was caught in a sewer but it actually escaped from a zoo and was looking for a place to hide. This is probably where the writers got the idea in the first place.
There is a Chinese or Japanese Town Called USA So Garment Labels Can Say "Made in USA"
First of all there is no town in China called Usa but there is a town in Japan called Usa. The origins of the town of Usa, Japan however go back to the 8th century. Lastly, garment labels must display the country of origin only and not the city, town, province or state.
We Only Use Ten Percent of Our Brains
The fact is that humans use all of their brains. What part or how much depends on the complexity of the task or activity. If its a simple activity like watching TV then your wont be using very much. Conversely if you are performing a complex task that involves thinking and moving then you will be using much more. Humans just don't use every part at the same time, all the time. Psychics often repeat this fact because they can claim that their psychic power lies in the part of the brain that never gets used.
Blood in Our Body is Blue Until it Gets Exposed to Air and Turns Red
You blood is always red, regardless if its venous or arterial. Arterial blood is a deeper shade of red because it carries more red blood cells. Red blood cells are red because each one has a molecule of Iron at its centre. Oxygen molecules bond to the iron in order to carry it throughout your body.
When you look at your veins and they appear blue it is because of an optical illusion in which layers of fat in your skin are blocking certain wavelengths of light from reaching your eyes, thus you see blue.
Final Words
So many people these days just repeat whatever they hear without ever looking into whether its true or not. Some things get repeated so much that even if you tell the person the real answer they still wont believe you. The last one on the list was even repeated by a college professor to his class. I was in disbelief. Don't fall victim to this kind of nonsense, do some research and find out the real answer.
