Men and Keeping Their Word

Make a Promise and Keep It

There is a disturbing trend that is increasing among men of today and that is the failure to keep promises.  Some people believe that this trend is because of the rise of social media which leaves personal interactions at a minimum. Social interaction is key to becoming a better man.  You need to talk to people to become better at interacting with others.  One way that men are slipping at is the ability to keep promises.  It seems to happen many times when someone says "Yes, I'll do that." or "I'll call

you." but never follows through.  Many men know that they will never do what they promised as soon as they make the promise which leads them later to come up with lame excuses on why they didn't do it.  One of the lamest is blaming your phone or other modern technology.  That's not acceptable anymore.

Problem with Your Cell Phone?

Cell phones are in everyone's hands and people check them constantly.  Phone coverage and Wi-Fi coverage is better than its ever been.  People cant get away with saying that there was a problem with their phone.  Cell phones are so important that as soon as something is wrong with one the majority of people will fix it as soon as possible.  Men, if you are looking to give an excuse, don't use your cellphone as one, it's ridiculous and far too obvious.  Saying that there was a problem with your phone is this decades version of "The dog ate my homework." excuse.  Same thing goes with social media. Everyone is constantly on social media so it's next to impossible to avoid contact.

Why is it Important?

It is important for men to keep their word when they give it if nothing else but for honour.  A man's word is his bond.  It maintains relationships when there is nothing else to build it.  Promises that include favours can be returned for other favours.

There are men out there that will make a promise knowing that they will never keep it.  When this happens they are showing themselves of being untrustworthy and may never be asked to do anything again.  This may sound like a good thing but it's possible that person will not be asked to do something that may be to their advantage, thus hurting yourself in the end.  If you keep your word or promise successfully you will also find a greater sense of accomplishment, self-worth and see your standing in your social group improve.

Advantages of Keeping your Word

Reliability - People will see you as reliable and can be trusted with more sensitive tasks.

Self-Worth - Having a feeling of achievement and maybe a simple thank you will make you feel                               better about yourself.

Respect - People will treat you with greater respect and for men that may be the best prize of all.

Integrity - To grow intellectually as a man and better person overall you need to grow internally as                   well.

Social Standing - With increased trust and respect people will invariably like you more and hold                                       you in a higher regard.

Final Words

If you find that you cant keep a promise than don't do it in the first place.  Tell the person the you apologize but you cant do it.  It is better than accepting and than not pulling through for your friend. Not keeping your word can have terrible consequences for both people but can put you in someone's good graces if you do.  The modern man of tomorrow is a stalwart person who keeps their word and is always there for their people when they are able.
